Italy, Libya to ink deal on development of offshore fields

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plans to visit Tripoli this coming weekend, during the visit the signing of an energy agreement is expected, according to Rai Radio 1, Report informs referring to TASS.

During Meloni’s visit, an agreement will be signed between the Italian energy company Eni and the National Oil Corporation (NOC).

NOC President Farhat Omar Bengdara previously announced that the $8 billion deal is for the development of two offshore gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea.

At the beginning of the week, Meloni paid a visit to Algiers, where agreements in the field of energy were also signed. Italy is ramping up its gas purchases from various countries to completely phase out Russian gas.

Eni has a long history in Libya, including in the production sector.
