Heatwave fuels surge in LNG prices across Asia

The global energy market is feeling the heat this summer, quite literally. As temperatures soar to record-breaking levels, the demand for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is skyrocketing, pushing prices to their highest point since December 2023.

According to Report, which cites the leading Japanese economic newspaper Nikkei, spot market prices for LNG in Asian countries reached a staggering $12.6 per million British Thermal Units (BTU) in mid-June. This marks a significant 50% increase from early March prices, highlighting the intense pressure on energy resources.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that LNG consumption in the Asia-Pacific region will rise by 12% in 2024 compared to 2020 levels, reaching 937 billion cubic meters. This represents approximately 20% of global consumption, underscoring the region's pivotal role in shaping global energy trends.
