Air conditioners are one of the main causes of increasing electricity consumption, and therefore it is necessary to revise energy efficiency standards, executive director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, said at the ministerial dialogue on "Scaling Investments to Triple Renewable Energy and Double Energy Efficiency" taking place in Baku as part of the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference (COP29), Report informs.
He said that today 90% of households in the US and Japan have air conditioners: "This figure is 5% in Nigeria, 15% in Indonesia, and 20% in India. Due to rising income levels and the impact of climate change, people are buying air conditioners. For example, in Indonesia or Africa, using an air conditioner requires three times more electricity than in Japan. If we don't have energy efficiency standards for air conditioners, this will lead to waste of energy and money. Therefore, we must revise energy efficiency standards."
