The law to close the gas field in the Netherlands’ Groningen, which is the biggest in Europe, will come into force on April 19, reads a statement by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Netherlands, Report informs referring to foreign media.
“The law on the closure of the Groningen field will come into force on April 19, 2024. The King (Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands) signed the law on April 17, and today it was published in the government gazette. This finally marks the end of gas production there,” reads the message.
The Netherlands announced the cessation of gas production at the field from October 1, 2023. At the same time, it was decided that for one more year - until October 1, 2024 - gas wells would remain open in case of a very cold winter.
