Electricity production at Nakhchivan's HPPs grew by 16% in 2024

In 2024, the power plants under the State Energy Service of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan produced and transmitted over 484 million kWh of electricity to the grid, Maharram Abbasov, the Deputy Head of the Service and acting Head, told Report.

Abbasov noted that 51% of this energy was generated by thermal power plants, 36% by hydroelectric power plants, and 13% by solar and wind power plants.

“Compared to 2023, the share of thermal power plants was reduced by 16%, while hydroelectric power plants produced 16% more electricity thanks to abundant water. Additionally, 1% more electricity was produced and transmitted to the network by solar power plants in 2024 compared to 2023," he explained.

He also highlighted the plans for the Araz Hydroelectric Power Station, which has been operating since 1971: "The design and reconstruction of the Araz Hydroelectric Power Station are planned. Specialists from Russian, Ukrainian, and Austrian companies have conducted on-site inspections of the hydrotechnical and hydromechanical equipment at the station at different times. Considering that the station has been in operation for over 53 years, a complete reconstruction was decided upon, as the operational lifespan of the hydro turbines is 50 years and the hydro generators is 30 years. During the reconstruction, the design capacity of the station will be increased by 10%."
