The EU is actively working on modernizing infrastructure to expand access to Azerbaijani gas and simultaneously making efforts to reduce methane emissions, EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen said at the 11th Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting and 3rd Green Energy Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting in Baku, Report informs.
"There is a common desire among all stakeholders to increase the volume of gas supplies from Azerbaijan to regional markets in the coming years. After the successes achieved by Azerbaijan at COP29 last year, we all strive to use this momentum to accelerate the energy transition. This means tripling renewable energy generation and doubling energy efficiency worldwide by 2030. The Grids and Storage Pledge and Global Methane Pledge initiatives play an important role in this," he noted.
Jørgensen also congratulated Azerbaijan on the results achieved in reducing methane emissions, emphasizing the country's leadership role in the region in this direction.
"We observe high interest from regional partners, European businesses, and investors in Azerbaijan's rapidly developing renewable energy sector. This creates new opportunities for expanding regional interconnectivity, market integration, and the formation of value chains in clean technologies," he noted.
He said that discussions were held on the sidelines of the plenary session with relevant ministers on creating a green energy corridor in the region.
"Special attention was paid to the prospects for the development of wind energy in the Caspian Sea. The meeting with representatives of the European wind energy industry and the Renewable Energy Agency of Azerbaijan was particularly interesting, as the country is actively promoting the realization of its enormous potential in offshore wind energy," Jørgensen added.
