Candidacy of OPEC’s new secretary-general may be considered in December

At a meeting on December 1, OPEC ministers may discuss the candidacy of Kuwait’s representative Haitham al-Ghais for the post of secretary-general from August 1, 2022, Report informs referring to TASS.

Since 2016, the post of OPEC secretary-general has been held by Mohammed Barkindo, his second term of office expires in July 2022. According to the organization’s charter, the secretary-general is elected for a three-year term and can be re-elected only once.

Haitham al-Ghais led the Kuwaiti delegation to OPEC from 2017 to 2021, simultaneously serving as an advisor to the emirate’s oil ministers.

Al-Ghais has experience of work in oil companies as well as in the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry.
