BP proposes new energy corridor through Azerbaijan

British Petroleum (BP) has expressed its readiness to participate in the development of a new energy route intended for exporting gas from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan through Azerbaijan via the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), Baghir Ibrahimov, Chief Geologist at BP Azerbaijan, said, as quoted by Report.

He noted that at the end of March, BP's regional management confirmed Kazakhstan"s central role in establishing the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan energy corridor.

"BP intends to leverage its accumulated experience in Azerbaijan to build a synchronized infrastructure. This will enable the transportation of gas from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan across the Caspian Sea, with subsequent connection to the SGC," Ibrahimov emphasized.

He estimated that by 2030, this corridor could become one of the key instruments for diversifying energy supplies to Europe, with Kazakhstan having the potential to provide a significant share of production.

Ibrahimov also reminded that the Kazakh national company KazMunayGas (KMG) and BP Exploration Operating Company Limited have signed an agreement for cooperation in geological exploration and development of the prospective Ustyurt block, located in Kazakhstan's Mangistau region.

The geologist noted that a key component of the corridor"s development will be the joint work of BP and KMG to expand Kazakhstan"s resource base.

"The project involves large-scale geological exploration in the Ustyurt Basin in western Kazakhstan, a region estimated to hold substantial untapped gas reserves. The multi-year program will include comprehensive 2D and 3D seismic surveys, as well as drilling several deep exploratory wells between 2026 and 2029," the geologist emphasized.
