By the end of 2023, all EU countries will ditch Russia's energy resources, except perhaps Hungary, which will become an exception "for political reasons," the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell during a speech at the International University in Spain, Report informs.
At the same time, he noted that the EU retains its technological dependence on China and it is more than energy dependence on the Russian Federation.
In early October, Borrell said that the European economy was going to be restructured, as European prosperity had been built on cheap Russian energy resources. According to Bloomberg, before the start of the war in Ukraine, the EU bought 40% of all gas in Russia; now, it is less than 8%.
On January 18, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto asked the EU to keep his country able to supply gas and oil from the Russian Federation. According to him, Hungary has nowhere else to import energy resources from. At the end of August, Hungary signed a contract with Gazprom to purchase an additional 5.8 million cubic meters of gas per day from September 1. In October, the parties agreed to increase supplies via the Turkish Stream.
