AZAL preparing strategy to achieve net-zero by 2050

Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL) is developing its own strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with 90% of emissions reductions expected to come from measures implemented within the aviation sector itself, Mahammad Aliyev, ESG Data Management Business Partner at AZAL, said during a panel discussion held as part of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), as quoted by Report.

"Right now, the company is purchasing new aircraft that reduce emissions by 15–20%. In addition, since last year, we have already been using 2% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on European flights, and by 2050 this figure is expected to increase to around 30%. Optimizing fleet and route management should also deliver an 8% reduction in emissions," he stressed.

According to him, the carbon market is not the only tool in the overall decarbonization strategy, but rather one of its components.
