Aytan Hajiyeva: BP uses AI for automation, but not yet ready to transfer decisions to it

BP is already actively using various forms of AI in its operations, Aytan Hajiyeva-Agalarova, vice president of BP's Georgian office for the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye region, said during the 30th Baku Energy Forum, as quoted by Report.

"We widely use AI, but it is important to understand that there is a whole range of technologies behind this concept," she noted.

According to Hajiyeva, BP uses machine learning for predictive equipment maintenance, large language models (LLM) - to optimize document flow and reporting. Drones, robotics, and visual AI systems are also used.

"These tools allow us to automate routine processes and increase efficiency, but so far, they do not concern the transfer of decision-making rights to AI. This is the next, much more complex stage," she emphasized.

As a BP representative noted, the idea of delegating decision-making to AI is especially sensitive for high-risk industries such as energy.

"Yes, it sounds almost radical - especially in the context of high-risk production. That is why at this stage we cannot say that such technologies are ready for safe use," Hajiyeva added.

In conclusion, she noted that BP continues the path of automation and is actively exploring the potential of AI, but the issue of autonomous decision-making requires deep study.

"We show an open but responsible approach to this. It is important for us to understand how AI can be safely integrated into management processes, especially in industries like ours," she said.
