ABB Energy Industries: No unified approach to assessing autonomy in energy sector

Although the use of autonomous technologies in the energy sector is expanding rapidly, a unified approach to assessing levels of autonomy in this field has not yet been developed.

Report informs that Danilo Cesar de Silva, Vice President of ABB Energy Industries, said this during panel discussions held at the Baku Expo Center as part of the 31st Caspian Oil and Gas International Exhibition in Baku.

According to him, automation and autonomy technologies are used in many areas of the modern world, from smart warehouses to aircraft and autonomous vehicles.

"In modern aircraft, direct pilot intervention accounts for only 7-8 minutes of flight time, which shows how widely autonomous solutions are used in aviation. The growing complexity of energy systems, workforce transformation and the need to increase productivity are prompting companies to invest more in autonomous technologies. Autonomy is used not to replace people, but to increase the productivity and efficiency of assets," he said.

He added that the automotive industry has an international classification defining levels of autonomy from 0 to 5.

"According to the company's approach, at level 0, all processes are completely dependent on human intervention. As the level increases, the need for human hands, eyes and thought processes to control the system decreases. Level 5 means full autonomy. At this stage, processes are carried out without human intervention. In the energy sector, defining and standardizing levels of autonomy is also of great importance for future technological development," he said.
