Minister: Climate-resilient future of human development comes through education and science

Education and science are at the center of the mission needed to build a climate-resilient future of human development in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan's Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev told a joint session on "Baku Human Development Initiative for Climate Resilience" held on the sidelines of COP29, Report informs.

The minister stated that changes begin with education:

"It is important to integrate quality climate change education at all levels of education, from early age to higher education. We have taken concrete steps by incorporating climate education into the national curriculum to ensure that every student understands their role in protecting the planet."

There is still much work to be done in preparing educators to raise awareness about climate change, Amrullayev noted:

"Azerbaijan's Social Economic Development Strategy for 2022-2026 pays great attention to building sustainable and low-carbon education systems. This is reflected in our efforts to ensure schools can withstand climate impacts and modernize school infrastructure in sensitive regions as safe learning environments. Additionally, through the Great Return Program, we have focused on rebuilding and revitalizing the liberated territories of Karabakh, supporting sustainable development, and creating strong communities where education and innovation can develop."

The minister also mentioned that attention is being paid to integrating climate measurements into international assessments like PISA and transforming education systems to become greener:

"This includes adapting curricula, improving teacher training, and creating schools that advocate sustainability and resilience. Higher education should also set an example. We are preparing students to become leaders in climate resilience by aligning our universities with global sustainability standards. Together, we can create an inclusive and sustainable future through education, science, and partnership."
