Astronomers record strongest solar flare over past seven years

The strongest flare of the past seven years has been recorded on the Sun, Report informs citing the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory named after Nasreddin Tusi.

The solar activity increased, and on December 31, 2023, an X5.0 class flare was recorded in 3,536 areas. This outbreak was the most powerful since 2017.

Since the flare occurred at the eastern edge of the disk, on the far side of the Sun, the impact on Earth was weak.

Currently, the number of sunspots is increasing, and there are 171 sunspots and coronal holes in 10 sunspot groups.

Previously, the most powerful flare of 2023 on the Sun was recorded on December 14.
