Steve Hamburg: Without reforms, we will only reach acceptable levels of methane emissions by 2100

Reducing methane emissions is a crucial tool in the fight against climate change, chief scientist of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Professor Steve Hamburg, said at a panel session on "Progress in Methane Mitigation: Advancing Global Methane Reduction," held as part of the Baku Climate Action Week, Report informs.

He noted that humanity currently faces two main problems: global warming and methane emissions.

According to the scientist, although methane's residence time in the atmosphere is relatively short, it causes significant harm to nature: "Methane is short-lived. At the end of its life cycle, it turns into CO2 and water vapor, but its effect is very powerful." The expert emphasized that if climate reforms are not implemented now, the consequences will be severe, and humanity will only reach acceptable methane emission levels by 2100. "If we quickly reduce methane emissions, our world will become much cleaner in the next few decades," he said.
