Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree on additional measures to improve waste management, Report informs.
The decree establishes a State Waste Management Agency under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
The agency is an organization within the ministry that exercises state control, regulation, and coordination in the field of waste management (generation, collection, sorting, transportation, placement, processing, use, recycling, rendering harmless, and disposal of waste) and waste fee collection.
The Cabinet of Ministers has been instructed to prepare and submit to the head of state proposals on the Agency's charter and structure, the number of its employees, as well as on improving the Law "On Waste" and other waste management regulations, taking into account international best practices.
Furthermore, the government must submit proposals for the draft "National Strategy for Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management for 2027–2030," in coordination with the draft "Socioeconomic Development Strategy for 2027–2030."
The Cabinet of Ministers has also been instructed to take the necessary measures within two months to address the Agency's logistical support, funding for its maintenance costs, provision of an administrative building, and other matters arising from the decree.
