Minister: Over past 10 years, water level in Caspian Sea dropped by 114 cm

The level of the Caspian Sea has decreased by 69 cm over the past 5 years and by 114 cm over the past 10 years, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, said at the meeting of the expert group on studying the cause of the change in the level of the Caspian Sea, as well as preparing appropriate adaptation measures, Report informs.

He stressed that the current state of the environment of the Caspian Sea and the dynamics of the lowering of the sea level are cause for concern.

According to Babayev, the faster the sea level changes, the more severe consequences it has: “Fluctuations in the level of the Caspian Sea affect the state of the coastal environment and a number of sectors of the economy related to the sea—fishing, maritime transport, port operations, construction, as well as the population living in the coastal areas.”
