EDF Chief Scientist: Reducing methane emissions is key factor in protecting environment

Reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas industry is a primary condition for environmental protection, Professor Steven Hamburg, the Chief Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), said during the panel session themed "Advancing the Fight Against Methane: Promoting Global Methane Reduction" held as part of the Baku Climate Action Week, Report informs.

Hamburg highlighted that some countries have already achieved success in this regard, and other nations should follow their example. He specifically pointed to Norway as a role model, stating, "Norway produces oil and gas, yet the level of methane emissions is extremely low. Linking gas production to methane emissions is not inevitable. By achieving this result worldwide, we will reduce the level of global warming."

The chief scientist also noted that while methane can be used as a fuel, it should not contribute to atmospheric pollution. He believes that alongside methane, hydrogen should also be utilized.

"We are working on how to do this correctly to achieve complete decarbonization, ensuring that we use hydrogen where it will be most effective in terms of decarbonization," Hamburg added.
