Azerbaijan to receive 9 more bison in November

Nine more bison are planned to be delivered to Azerbaijan in November, said Elshad Asgarov, head of the Azerbaijan office of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Report informs.

He said that bison died out in the South Caucasus in 1937: “In accordance with the Cooperation Agreement signed between the IDEA Public Association and the Shahdag National Park, in May 2019, as many as 12 bison were brought from Europe to the Ismayilli branch of the Shahdag National Park, and five more bison in 2020. In total, 20 bison heads were brought, which were released into the wild. Currently, nine heads are kept in an aviary in Ismayilli. Another 9 heads will be brought in November.”

Asgarov noted that it is planned to bring 100 bison to Azerbaijan by 2028: “According to zoologists, bison will not be endangered if their population in the country reaches 500 heads.”
