Azerbaijan celebrates the Restoration of Independence Day on October 18.
Report informs that 30 years have passed since the adoption of the Constitutional Act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Constitutional Act referred to the Declaration of Independence of May 28, 1918, and the Declaration of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated August 30, 1991, "On the restoration of state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan". In keeping with this document, Azerbaijan was declared the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
For the first time since 1991, the people of Azerbaijan celebrate this holiday in a completely different way, as a victorious nation that has restored its territorial integrity. The people of Azerbaijan established an independent republic at the beginning of the last century, and in 1991 the Republic of Azerbaijan regained its independence as the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
In May 1992, the parliament approved the national anthem of Azerbaijan, and later the national flag as well as the coat-of-arms depicting an eight-pointed star with flames.
At the plenary session of the Azerbaijani Parliament on October 15, 2021, a new law "On Independence Day" was adopted. On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev approved the law.
With the approval of the law, May 28 - Republic Day and October 18 - State Independence Day were renamed. May 28 was declared Independence Day, and October 18 was declared Day of Restoration of Independence.
These days will be celebrated every year. The Independence Day in Azerbaijan will be a non-working day, and the Day of Restoration of Independence will be a working day.
