Ombudsman: Mine planted by Armenians in Kalbajar could lead to mass casualties

The Commissioner for Human Rights of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman), Sabina Aliyeva, made a statement regarding the mine danger in the liberated territories, Report informs, citing Ombudsman's office.

"A terrible tragedy was prevented during a recent trip of former internally displaced persons, residents of the village of Gunashli of the Kalbajar region to their native lands. Thanks to the vigilance of Azerbaijani servicemen, an anti-tank mine was found on the road leading to the village. This saved the lives of 20 people, among whom were representatives of state structures and media.

"Apparently, this mine, which could lead to mass casualties, was planted by the Armenians during the period given to invaders to leave the Kalbajar region in 2020.

"The planting of mines by Armenia near civilian settlements and its failure to provide reliable maps of minefields, despite numerous calls from the Azerbaijani side, violates several fundamental human rights, contrary to international humanitarian law. Though we have repeatedly appealed to international organizations on this issue, no result has been achieved.

"As Azerbaijan's Ombudsperson, I once again express my serious concern about the mine threat, remind Armenia of its obligation to comply with international law, and call on international organizations to support Azerbaijan in this matter by taking a fair and decisive stance."
