Community chairman: 70 percent of modern Armenian surnames have Azerbaijani-Turkic roots

Seventy percent of modern Armenian surnames have Azerbaijani-Turkic roots, chairman of the Western Azerbaijan Community, deputy Aziz Alekberli said in an interview with Report.

According to him, the Armenianization of Azerbaijani monuments in Western Azerbaijan is an attempt at self-deception.

"Historical sources contain sufficient information about the origin of these monuments and their belonging to the Azerbaijani people. The formation of Azerbaijanophobia in Armenian society is the result of education conducted over decades, if not centuries. However, this ideology has predictably led them to a dead end," Alakbarli said.

The community chairman emphasized that the appropriation of Azerbaijani cultural heritage in Western Azerbaijan is only a small part of Armenian policy:

"As a researcher of Armenian surnames, I can assert that 70 percent of modern Armenian surnames have Azerbaijani-Turkic roots."
