Brussels meeting: Important step towards peace - OPINION

"The trilateral meeting in Brussels is of great importance for Azerbaijan. The main thing is that the issues to be discussed in the preparatory phase of the five-point peace agreement, which was put forward by the Azerbaijani side in previous meetings, were reaffirmed. In general, the Brussels meeting was an important step towards peace," Azerbaijani MP Mahir Abbaszade told Report.

Abbaszade stressed that one of the main points is that the term Nagorno-Karabakh was not mentioned in the agreement, the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides held meetings on the demarcation of borders, territorial integrity, the inviolability of borders, as well as the opening of communications:

"For a long time, President Ilham Aliyev said in his speeches that Armenians living in a part of Karabakh are Azerbaijani citizens. In our country, like the rights and freedoms of all peoples, all the civil rights of Armenians living in Karabakh are recognized as citizens of Azerbaijan. It has been repeatedly said that the opening of communications and the signing of a peace agreement should play a role not only for Azerbaijan and Armenia but also as a key guarantee of peace and security in the South Caucasus as a whole. Because today Armenia is a country with a disbanded army and a poor population. But Azerbaijan is one of the world's economically developing countries," he said.

The MP added that the strengthening of economic ties and the restoration of communications will improve the economic situation in Armenia.
