Petition on Khojaly genocide submitted to Canadian Parliament

A petition on the Khojaly massacre has been submitted to the Canadian Parliament, with the support of the Network of Azerbaijani Canadians (NAC), Report informs.

The petition was published as an official petition with the support of Michael Cooper, a member of the Canadian Parliament from the Conservative Party, and was submitted to the Parliament with the signatures of more than 1,500 Canadian citizens. Presenting the petition in Parliament yesterday, Michael Cooper said that the Khojaly massacre was the bloodiest page in the Karabakh conflict and that as a result of the conflict, Azerbaijani territories were occupied by Armenia and more than 800,000 Azerbaijanis were expelled from their lands.

The petition demands that the Canadian Government officially condemn the Khojaly massacre committed by the Armenian military and declare February 26 as Remembrance Day in Canada.

The petition also calls on Canada to support efforts to delimit and demarcate the Azerbaijan-Armenia borders, as well as to normalize relations, in order to establish lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the future.

Azerbaijanis living in Canada took an active part in collecting signatures for the petition. To date, NAC has been in close contact with members of the Canadian Parliament and senators, members of the provincial parliaments and local government officials on issues of concern to the Canadian population of Azerbaijani descent, and is holding intensive meetings. NAC intends to continue this work in the coming months and to convey the views of the Azerbaijani community to Canadian politicians and government agencies.
