The participants of the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Baku shared with the Report their thoughts on inclusion of the historic center of Sheki together with the Khan’s Palace in the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as their impressions of Azerbaijan.
The Secretary General of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC), Denis Ricard, noted that it was a long but pleasant journey.
“I am very happy about Sheki. I have already met with Сhief of executive power and discussed next steps. We have great hopes and many projects that we want to deal with in Sheki”.
Deputy Secretary General of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) Fouli Minaidis said that Azerbaijan has rich historical sites that should be paid attention to.
"This time until today again I was only in the city with one trip to Gala which was very lovely. We are very very pleased that second city has been inscribed on UNESCO World heritage list. You know, the old city of Icheri Sheher is one of our active members. We were here in October hosted by administrator Askar Alakbarov. We held our board of director’s meeting here. What we see in Baku and beyond is a fantastic sight.
We look forward to greeting the new Azerbaijani city Sheki as one of our members”, - she said.
In turn, a university lecturer from Ethiopia emphasized the peculiarity of life in Azerbaijan:
“I am pretty much impressed by my stay in Azerbaijan, how Azerbaijani people and government pay special attention to culture to natural heritage and how they work hard to protect it. I am so happy to visit many places in short time. Special thing about Azerbaijan is the way the things are presented in a way expressive and it helps you to see culture and identity of people in every way of life”.
