Efficient management of water resources plays a crucial role in achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement, stated Nicolas Franke, a representative of the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Expert Group on Water and Climate Change, Report informs.
Franke made this statement during the event themed "Water for Climate: Integrating Water Solutions into NDCs and NAPs,” held within the framework of COP29.
He emphasized that incorporating water resources into energy and climate change mitigation strategies, as well as integrating climate issues into water strategic planning, can significantly contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) and the Paris Agreement objectives.
"This approach not only reduces project risks but also allows for achieving more climate benefits with less water consumption and lower overall costs," he added.
The WMO expert called on countries to consider these aspects when preparing their NDC 3.0 documents. He also highlighted the need for expanding technical guidance and filling information gaps to facilitate this integration.
"Solving the climate problem is directly linked to efficient water management. If we can manage water resources sustainably, water will, in turn, serve humanity's sustainable future," Franke concluded.
