The extensive focus on climate change, human displacement, and migration at COP29 lays the groundwork for Azerbaijan to be a reference point in future COP events, signaling an expansion of efforts in this regard, Vusal Huseynov, the head of the Azerbaijan State Migration Service (SMS), told journalists within the COP29, Report informs.
Huseynov emphasized that Azerbaijan's keen attention to the issue of human displacement reflects the country's sensitivity to these matters.
"COP29 has been ongoing in Azerbaijan for the second week now. Today, a high-level discussion panel was organized, focusing on the challenges and problems posed by climate change for human displacement. Even before COP29, high-level events were held in New York City as part of the UN General Assembly. Now, the highest-level event is taking place at COP29. Azerbaijan's significant attention to the topic of human displacement is a result of the country's sensitive approach to these issues," Huseynov explained.
He also noted that relevant decrees and action plans have been signed and implemented in the field of efficient use of water resources.
"Climate change affects every corner of the world, and Azerbaijan, as a part of the world, is not immune to these impacts. Today's event primarily focuses on climate change and forced human displacement. Natural disasters and the reduction of water resources also contribute to human displacement. This topic is one of the priority areas of Azerbaijan's policy," he added.
