UN: Window of opportunity to reach zero carbon target by 2050 is narrowing

The window of opportunity to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050 and keep global warming below 1.5 C is rapidly closing, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva said at the 5th Sustainable Development Goals Dialogue held in Baku on "Voices of the Future: Coordinating Climate Action and Efforts Towards Global Goals," Report informs.

"We need to increase ambitions, this is very important. We want countries to further strengthen their commitments. New pledges will determine whether the world is collectively moving in the right direction to keep the global average temperature below 1.5 C. COP29 host Azerbaijan will present its new nationally determined contributions before this event. However, ambitions alone are not enough - we need to expand implementation and increase climate finance. Financial support for adaptation and mitigation is particularly important for developing countries," she noted.

Andreeva emphasized that the coming years are a crucial period for bold climate action: "We will support the climate agenda with all partners and in support of the government."
