UN environment chief praises Azerbaijan's preparations for COP29

Azerbaijan is carrying out extensive work for the successful hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Inger Andersen, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), said.

According to Report, she was speaking during a joint press conference with Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President.

"UNEP will do everything in our power to ensure the successful hosting of COP29 in Baku," Andersen stated.

Inger Andersen noted that the country is working hard to overcome the climate crisis: "Azerbaijan is doing a lot in this matter. I saw with my own eyes what Azerbaijan is doing to protect its nature, its treasures, and biodiversity. Therefore, we are incredibly grateful to Azerbaijan for this leadership and look forward to COP29 when the whole world will gather in your beautiful city."

Andersen emphasized that the staff of the United Nations Environment Programme will do everything possible to ensure the success of this project: "We cooperate with more than 80 countries, helping them prepare for negotiations. We work in many countries with an extensive portfolio of projects. And, of course, we are determined to ensure that the financing package planned to be adopted here in Baku is adopted and is fair."
