Umaira Taghiyeva: Azerbaijan currently preparing targets for updated NDC 3.0

Azerbaijan is fully committed to advancing climate action and achieving our national goals. Last year, an ambitious target was set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels, Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umaira Taghiyeva said at a high-level meeting within COP29, according to Report.

"We have also committed to increase the share of renewable energy in total installed capacity to 30% by 2030 in line with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees. Green energy zones established in Karabakh, Eastern Zangazur, and Nakhchivan will directly contribute to mitigation, especially in the energy sector," she stated.

Azerbaijan is currently preparing targets for updated NDC 3.0, she noted. "The new document will define detailed strategies for emission reductions in key sectors. They will also integrate climate considerations, international strategies and policies, clean environment, and green growth.

"We have prepared our first biennial transparency report, demonstrating Azerbaijan's commitment to international climate agreements and emphasizing dedication to accountability and trust-building. As a country highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, adaptation is our main priority," Taghiyeva emphasized.

According to her, the recently developed national adaptation plan defines comprehensive strategies to address key challenges, especially in agriculture, water resource management and coastal zones, and, of course, disaster risk reduction.

In conclusion, the deputy minister called on everyone to use COP29 as a platform for meaningful progress and long-term results.
