Türkiye unveils its climate targets in energy sector

Türkiye has set ambitious goals in the energy sector, which is the largest source of emissions, within the framework of Long-term climate strategy mitigation targets, the country's Minister of Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, stated, Report informs.

Kurum made the announcement during the presentation ceremony of the country's Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2030 in the Blue Zone of COP29.

According to him, Türkiye aims to maximize the share of renewable energy sources in the energy sector by 2053:

"We plan to increase the share of renewable energy to 50 percent and nuclear energy to 29 percent. With this, we will make approximately 80% of the energy we use nationally carbon-free. In the industrial sector, by 2053, we expect 93% emission reduction in cement production, 99% in iron and steel production, and 75% emission reduction in aluminum production."

Kurum said that Türkiye will operate with a zero waste principle in the waste industry.

"Over the years, we will stop sending waste to landfills. We will increase the waste recovery rate to 70%."
