The Transadriatic Pipeline (TAP) operator, responsible for delivering Azerbaijani gas to European markets, has joined the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) and has already achieved Level 4 this year, according to Luca Schieppati, Managing Director of TAP AG, who spoke at the OGMP event at COP29 in Baku.
According to Report, Schieppati said for the gas industry, the obvious priority is to combat leaks and emissions.
He said they started operations at the end of 2020, and from the very beginning, it was important for the company to work on emissions in general, greenhouse gas emissions, and, in particular, on leaks.
The company has developed an emissions management plan and has already achieved significant results.
Schieppati said annual testing is carried out at their facilities in three countries, and we have already achieved a 70% reduction compared to the first measurements in 2021.
He said the TAP operator joined OGMP last year and immediately reached Level 4 this year. Schieppati expressed confidence in achieving the gold standard by 2026, as envisioned by Italgaz.
This applies not only to the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor but also to SOCAR, which has also joined OGMP. Thus, the entire Southern Gas Corridor is focused on this priority.
Schieppati said all of this requires attention and reorganization, but it is an important element for continuing sustainable development, since it's not just about secure supplies or diversification, but also a long-term path to sustainability as a source of emissions.
Therefore, reducing the carbon footprint, including methane and leaks, is a key part of the process.
Schieppati said this is a priority for companies, which will ensure not only a constant contribution to safer, more reliable gas transportation and the acceptance of renewable and low-carbon gases into the system in the long term but also a guarantee that no negative impact is left for the future.
