Sierra Leone minister: Global North not living up to its financial commitments

The Global North is not fulfilling its climate financing commitments to the Global South adequately, Sierra Leone's Environment and Climate Change Minister Jiwoh Emmanuel Abdulai told Report on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku.

"There would be no point for us to come to COP29 if they [the Global North] were fulfilling their climate financing commitments," he said.

According to him, developed countries' ignoring of their climate financing obligations has catastrophically negative effects on developing nations' economies.

"We hope that we will be able to resolve this issue because otherwise, it will result in major losses for our countries, economies, and ecosystems," said Abdulai.

The minister emphasized that Sierra Leone is also suffering from the negative consequences of the climate crisis.

"The longer we wait to make decisions, the higher the price will be, the more lives it will take. Our economy and biodiversity will suffer," he concluded.
