Samad Bashirli: Azerbaijan will have to levy carbon tax if other countries do

Azerbaijan will have to levy a carbon tax if all countries start collecting such a tax, Deputy Minister of Economy Samad Bashirli said at the Sustainable Development Goals Dialogue on "Voices of the Future: Coordinating Efforts in Climate Action and Global Goals," organized in Baku by the Ministry of Economy and the UN Representative Office in Azerbaijan, Report informs.

"We take into account today's prices when calculating technology costs, but we cannot predict what the cost of this technology will be in 5-10 years. As the number of technologies aimed at climate change and emission reduction increases, a decrease in their prices will likely be inevitable. The second key issue is the impact on the real sector. This impact will definitely occur. At the same time, we must remember that just a few years ago, the term carbon tax was only used in very specific cases, and now it's entering our agenda. If all countries start applying carbon tax, we won't have the option to act differently. Undoubtedly, this will affect the real sector. But we cannot integrate into the world economy without considering global reality," he noted.
