Sahiba Gafarova: Parliaments need to improve legislation to combat climate change

Hosting COP29 in Azerbaijan is a sign of the country's determination and dedication to addressing climate change issues, Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova, said at the Parliamentary Meeting in the Green Zone of COP29, Report informs.

According to Sahiba Gafarova, all countries in the world, including Azerbaijan, are affected by climate change: "In recent decades, Azerbaijan has faced excessive heat, water shortages, falling Caspian Sea levels, and floods."

"Azerbaijan has demonstrated confidence and determination by taking voluntary commitments and incorporating the green agenda into national development programs, implementing renewable energy projects, and creating green energy zones," the speaker added.

Gafarova noted that the parliament provides all necessary support to the government to expand climate activities: "Climate change is a major human challenge that transcends any national borders and requires collective efforts. As the climate crisis worsens, it becomes increasingly difficult to address the negative impacts of climate change. I believe we must improve legislation in this area, encourage governments to better mobilize their efforts, and pressure them to fulfill their commitments."
