"I am determined to turn mines in Karabakh into grapevines and hope that the COP29 climate conference in Baku will become an example that peace is possible through agriculture," Heidi Kühn, founder of the NGO Roots of Peace, told Report.
"I've been in Azerbaijan on three occasions, walking the minefields of Karabakh to see the devastation of an estimated 1.4 million landmines planted since November 2020. It is our moral responsibility as human beings to remove these deadly seeds of terror from the one soil we're given to shepherd and to restore the beautiful agricultural bounty of Karabakh. Beautiful grapes once flourished there for thousands of years. Karabakh means black garden. It was a black garden because of the beautiful purple grapes. Today, it is a black garden because of landmines. I am determined and committed to turning mines into vines in Karabakh, and may this COP29 be an example for the world that peace is possible through agriculture," she added.
