Role of higher education in tackling climate change discussed within COP29

During the COP29 conference in Baku, a panel discussion on the role of higher education in combating climate change brought together representatives from leading universities to explore how higher education institutions can contribute to sustainable development.

Ebru Canan Sokullu, Deputy Director of the Human Resources Department at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "Today's gathering brought together experts to examine how universities can drive climate action through research, policy discussions, and the preparation of future leaders in sustainability and the environment."

She said as climate change continues to pose unprecedented challenges on a global scale, the role of higher education institutions is becoming increasingly crucial in shaping leaders, promoting innovation, and ensuring sustainability.

The event participants noted that universities are at the forefront of conducting research, stimulating political discussions, and training future leaders capable of tackling the complex issues surrounding climate change.
