Promoting fair approach to combating climate change discussed at parliamentary meeting in Baku

On the second day of the Parliamentary meeting, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliament of Azerbaijan within the COP29 in Baku, the promotion of a comprehensive and fair approach to climate action was discussed, Report informs.

Speaking at the session, Jan Beagle, Director-General of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), said that climate change affects each country differently: "Our goal is to empower people through ambitious climate measures, promote justice and inclusive decision-making. The role of parliamentarians is also important here."

UN Development Programme climate change expert Catherine Wong stated that compared to previous years, the average air temperature has increased worldwide, and wars have increased.

"Countries suffering from conflicts also suffer from climate change. This shows that the impact on climate is growing day by day. There are very high risks in conflict-affected countries. This makes it difficult to implement adaptation plans at international and national levels. By mid-century, more than 200 million people will become forced migrants due to climate change. This number may increase," she said.

In conclusion, session participants held discussions on the topic.
