Greece will invest over 2 billion euros in strengthening civil infrastructure to protect against climate disasters, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at the official opening ceremony of the Greek pavilion at COP29 in Baku, Report informs.
"We must clearly recognize the fact that the climate crisis is present with us today. This means we need to find a balance between long-term mitigation and short-term adaptation. It's about redirecting significant resources to protect our citizens from climate disasters. I think we are becoming world leaders in providing innovative technological solutions to overcome the climate crisis," he said.
The prime minister emphasized that Greece's number one priority is early warning and protection of citizens.
In his opinion, environmental protection and fighting climate change, as well as the tasks of the Ministry of Environment, are much broader than just reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"What we call the circular economy in Europe will become a key element of our common environmental strategy," Mitsotakis added.
