Pakistan PM: COP29 presents opportunity to send strong message about importance of financial commitments

COP29 is an opportunity to strongly advocate for the fulfillment of financial commitments, Pakistan's Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said at the COP29 Leaders Summit in Baku, Report informs.

"I would like to congratulate President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for organizing COP29, which is a platform for discussing disasters that have already hit some countries and will hit others in the future if we don't act now," Sharif said.

He noted that the climate crisis caused catastrophic flooding in Pakistan in 2021.

Many agricultural crops were destroyed, millions of homes were submerged, and about 1,700 people died, he noted.

According to Sharif, COP29 is an opportunity to strongly advocate for the fulfillment of financial commitments made during previous climate conferences.

"Pakistan is fully committed to participating in global climate solutions and has already taken concrete actions to increase the share of clean energy in its energy mix to 60% by the end of the decade. Last year, Pakistan presented a comprehensive national adaptation plan. This year, we developed our national carbon market framework. However, we cannot cope alone. We need international support to fulfill our climate ambitions," he said.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that under Azerbaijan's chairmanship, COP29 can become a financial conference of the parties and help restore trust in the process and scale up climate financing.
