Nadezda Kokotovic: Azerbaijan can stimulate relevant discussions at COP29

Of 15 former Soviet republics, many of whom are reliant on energy sector, only Azerbaijan managed to host a session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP), Director of the Brussels Energy Club Nadezda Kokotovic told Report.

She believes that Azerbaijan could stimulate the development of necessary discussions in the right direction at the upcoming COP29.

“We see that countries' climate policies are leading to protests by populations in the West who do not agree with the financial and regulatory pressures of the Green Transition. This is a topic that needs to be discussed openly,” she said.

The club director expressed hope that Azerbaijan will continue to support developing countries that cannot afford the transition to a green economy.

According to Kokotovic, an important theme of COP29 should be the growing economic and legal inequality both within states themselves and inequality at the interstate level.

Speaking about Azerbaijan’s desire to use “green energy” in the liberated territories, the director noted that such a policy fits into the general socio-economic direction of the country’s development.

“In addition, this is also a reasonable step, since we are already seeing catastrophic consequences for the population of “non-green” cities both in the East and in the West,” she concluded.
