Mukhtar Babayev: Climate change is daily reality, not just theoretical threat

Climate change is no longer a theoretical threat, but a reality experienced every day, Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev said at the Global Summit of Religious Leaders in Baku, Report informs.

The minister highlighted that anthropogenic influences, industrialization and rapid economic growth, have posed a significant threat to numerous countries by contributing to global temperature increases and related disasters.

"We are witnessing how these threats turn into catastrophes for communities living in climate-sensitive regions," Babayev stated. He cited examples such as the changing frequency of rainfall and rising temperatures in the Congo Basin, which are causing significant damage to forests and rare ecosystems. Babayev added that the devastating floods in Pakistan, submerging one-third of the country, and the threat of destruction faced by communities in small island developing states further underscore the urgency of the situation.

Babayev stressed the need for immediate and inclusive approaches, placing the problems faced by these countries at the center of global efforts. He called for a substantial increase in climate finance, commending the COP29 Presidency for supporting activities aimed at addressing loss and damage.

The COP29 Action Agenda, as highlighted by the minister, focuses on ensuring that resources are more accessible to developing countries.

Babayev pointed out that Azerbaijan's COP29 Presidency has put forward 14 key initiatives, aiming to propose new approaches and innovative solutions not only at the national level but also globally. Through these initiatives, Azerbaijan will continue its leadership in supporting the global transition to a green economy.

“The Climate Finance Action Fund, established on Azerbaijan's initiative, will encourage investments from the public and private sectors in climate adaptation, mitigation, and research. This fund creates financing opportunities to swiftly address the consequences of natural disasters in developing countries,” he stated.
