Azerbaijan is determined to build a sustainable transport system, Azerbaijan's Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, said during ministerial press conference at COP29, Report informs.
The minister noted that practical ways have been identified for planning and implementing green transport policies within Azerbaijan's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC):
"There is a serious need for transport infrastructure development to reduce emissions and improve people's quality of life. Azerbaijan is moving forward decisively in this direction."
Speaking about Azerbaijan's commitments to combat climate change, Nabiyev stated that the country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030. According to him, a Mobility Transformation Program has been prepared for Baku city:
"Under this program, it is planned to reduce climate and traffic-related emissions to 0.6 metric tons of CO2 per active citizen by 2030. Combining cutting-edge technologies and a human-centered approach, Azerbaijan is moving towards a greener and more connected future."
The minister also provided information about specific measures taken within the program: "Creation of 100 kilometers of infrastructure for micromobility is planned, and more than 30 kilometers have already been put into use. Extending public transport coverage to 90% of the population is a key priority."
He stated that significant steps have been taken to expand the electric bus fleet: "Recently, 160 electric buses have been added to the fleet, and electrification of all buses is targeted by 2030."
Nabiyev also emphasized the special attention paid to implementing innovations in the transport sector: "In a short time, we have managed to create Baku's 'digital twin.' This digital platform enables more effective data-based decision-making in all our activities."
These initiatives by Azerbaijan are exemplary steps at the global level in fighting climate change and building a sustainable transport system, the minister stated.
