Masdar reveals plans to decarbonize Azerbaijan's railways

The UAE's Masdar company has identified the decarbonization potential of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) as a result of joint research, Murad Sadigov, the head of Masdar's representative office in Azerbaijan, said at the event "Towards a Sustainable Future with Transport Corridors: Railways in Climate Policy" within COP29, Report informs.

He noted that Masdar and ADY are at the research stage and, as a first step, plan to gradually decarbonize the rolling stock and freight logistics facilities.

He also spoke about plans for clean energy production in Azerbaijan.

He added that the country aims to produce up to 10 gigawatts of clean energy: "Contracts have been signed for 1-gigawatt capacity projects, including two solar power plant projects with a capacity of 760 megawatts. Additional financing agreements were signed within COP29. Additionally, a wind power plant project with a capacity of 240 megawatts has been implemented."

Sadigov emphasized that these initiatives are part of the country's climate resilience strategy and the goal of sustainable development in the transport sector.
