Lars Aagaard: Agriculture holds key to Denmark's greenhouse gas reduction

Denmark will not be able to achieve its planned greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030 without active participation from the agricultural sector, Denmark's Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard Møller told journalists on the sidelines of the COP29 climate conference.

Report informs that, according to him, the agricultural sector must recognize its responsibility for emissions reduction.

"This is strategically important because agricultural emissions must decrease significantly in the future. On this basis, we have secured support from a broad coalition in parliament, and now farmers understand what changes will occur by 2030," the minister noted.

He also emphasized that Denmark is considering introducing a carbon dioxide emissions tax that will apply to the agricultural sector.

"Farmers are actively participating in this process, which gives me confidence that the agreement will not remain on paper but will become reality. We cannot achieve our 2030 goal without significant emissions reduction in agriculture. Therefore, you can be sure that this commitment will be implemented," Møller emphasized.

It should be noted that Denmark aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 70% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
