Korea Energy Agency: Central Asia has untapped potential for renewable energy

The commitment to triple renewable energy potential worldwide by 2030 is a major step forward in energy transition, President of the Korea Energy Agency Sanghon Lee stated at the Central Asian Regional Seminar titled "Tripling renewable energy installation capacity by 2030: Taking practical steps to accelerate renewable energy use in Central Asia" held on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Report informs.

According to Lee, Central Asian countries with growing economies and increasing populations need more energy for development: "However, fossil fuels still account for 95% of total energy supply in the 5 Central Asian countries - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Heavy dependence on fossil fuels makes the region vulnerable to supply shortages and price shocks. To increase energy security and achieve commitments in accordance with the Paris Agreement, these countries are actively exploring ways to transition from current fossil fuel dependency to a low-carbon and sustainable energy system."
