The Middle Corridor has taken on a pivotal role amidst the current geopolitical instability, Chief of Staff at Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Alfredo Storto said, Report informs.
He made the remark at the ministerial roundtable themed "Sustainable, Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond," held as a part of COP29.
Storto highlighted that strengthening the resilience and sustainability of infrastructure, improving digital connectivity and data exchange, and promoting regional cooperation and partnerships for development are fundamental to achieving significant progress in Europe-Asia connectivity.
"While increasing air and sea connectivity, investing in the modal shift from road to rail should remain our long-term goal," Storto stated. "The challenge is vast, requiring digital innovation and appropriate financial levers. Italy is doing its part on both fronts. We are upgrading our rail capabilities, investing in the digitalization and decarbonization of ports, and constructing new and efficient dry ports and intermodal freight terminals. We have also developed a strong and dynamic biofuel industry."
