The main thing Azerbaijan can do is make the COP into a success, Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate Action, told journalists, according to Report.
"The world is in need for leadership at the COP, and the presidency always plays a tremendously important role. It cannot just facilitate, it will need to lead. And we stand ready to help the COP presidency with that," Hoekstra said.
He also noted that the EU considers transparency and increasing financing in fighting climate change a priority task.
"Well, first of all, we're all in on transparency, because otherwise we cannot measure and we don't know what countries actually do. That is of utmost importance. Secondly, we need to bring more money to the table, more public sector financing and more private sector financing. The European Union will continue to do more than its fair share, but it is of pivotal importance that other countries chip in as well. There is a large group of countries with the affluence, with the ability to pay, and they should also rise to the occasion and take this responsibility," Hoekstra said.
