The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF), accredited as a UN observer non-governmental organization, has called on parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change to include support for walking and cycling in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to accelerate climate goals achievement and improve citizens' health.
Report informs, citin ECF, that the European Cyclists' Federation will again actively participate in COP29 as an observer and will act as a key party to the Partnership for Active Travel and Health (PATH) and the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLOCAT). The organization will be represented by CEO Jill Warren and Networks Director Froso Christofides at COP29.
Experts emphasize that the ability to safely walk and cycle, along with access to public transport, can reduce transport emissions by half by 2030. This is one of the most effective and fastest ways to achieve the Paris Agreement goals.
However, PATH research has shown that measures supporting walking and cycling are still undervalued in national climate plans, despite relevant policies existing in two-thirds of countries.
