It is necessary to combine efforts to reduce emissions in all types of transportation, especially in heavy-duty freight vehicles, Deputy Minister of Environment and International Relations of the Netherlands, Aafke van Rijn, said at the ministerial roundtable on "Sustainable and Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond" within COP29.
She emphasized the importance of innovation, standardization, and regulation to create a level playing field.
Electric transport, hydrogen technologies, and appropriate infrastructure are needed to decarbonize freight corridors, she said.
According to her, transport corridors play a key role in countries' economies and lives.
Fighting freight transport emissions is important for achieving climate goals. Electric technology is developing rapidly, prices are decreasing, and the range is growing. Countries implementing ambitious environmental policies will attract investments and receive significant economic benefits, said van Rijn.
